This blog is a tutorial on how to install the operating system Fedora. This blog is a tutorial on how to install the operating system Fedora. We will be installing from Microsoft Windows, though it may be possible with other Operating Systems as well. We will be using Virtualbox to create a virtual machine in order to run Fedora. In this tutorial, we will learn about the steps involved in installing Fedora. There are a few choices to pick from while installing Fedora. First of all, we require a set of iso images. These images are available on the official website at http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora . The ISO images contain all the files required for installation, hence these images are called mandatory install images. In our particular case, we will get the Fedora 14 Update 5 final release iso image from http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/. Next we need to get the "VirtualBox". VirtualBox is a virtualization software, which runs your operating system in its own virtual machine. We will be using this software to run our guest operating system, i.e Fedora. The Virtualbox download link can be found at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads . You may also use any other supported virtualization software for this purpose, though without going into much detail, we will only discuss about Virtualbox here. Once you have downloaded both ISO image and Virtualbox, you should install the ISO image into the virtual machine created by the Virtualbox Software. We will begin with installing Fedora 14. First we need to install VirtualBox and then install the ISO image into the machine. We will be using the automated installation method, as it is quite simple and easy to understand. There are many ways of creating a virtual machine in VirtualBox, such as Importing an existing installation, creating a new virtual machine from scratch, etc... But we'll be sticking with the traditional way of installing an operating system in a virtual machine by using "Create New Virtual Machine" option. Once that is done, we can perform the installation of Fedora. To create a Fedora virtual machine, click on the New button at the top-left corner of VirtualBox; here you will find a New button in VirtualBox with three options, namely Virtualbox, Create new virtual machine and New. Click on the last option. New windows will open up showing different options for creating a new virtual machine. Select "Create new virtual machine." VirtualBox will prompt you to choose an operating system. Select "Fedora 14 final release" from the list of available operating systems, then click Next. On this next page of steps, select Use an existing virtual disk image and click Next again.
